Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life
If streaming was the television story of the decade, then close behind was the explosion of global content that came to American screens to help fill all that new bandwidth. Shows suddenly appeared from all over the world, most noticeably financed or acquired by Netflix but also flooding in through a myriad of other streaming services and cable networks.
Americans will read subtitles, it turns out. The world is a big place, with a lot of production companies, and on any given day in there were likely to be more international shows premiering in America than American-made shows.
The requirements for my list: scripted series produced outside the United States though some were American-financed , which were commercially available to American audiences, and which premiered in or later. Purposely rough around the edges and more than a little melodramatic, it compensates with exuberant energy and a large, uniformly endearing cast. Streaming on Amazon. An absurdist sitcom, set in and around an Ontario farm town, with the brittle loquacity of screwball comedy and the surreal jokiness of the Marx Brothers, much of it delivered in a highly expressive Canadian monotone.
Streaming on Hulu. Saif Ali Khan plays the turbaned inspector Sartaj Singh in a series, based on a novel by Vikram Chandra, that mixes Bollywood energy with a literary style and touches of magical realism. Streaming on Netflix. Subscribe to our twice-weekly newsletter. Sharon Rooney gives a delicate yet hilarious performance as a year-old, plus-pound girl, just home from a mental clinic after a suicide attempt, in this spirited, moving dramedy.
Several hilariously neurotic bands of Vikings fret about their diet, acceptable sanitation, the state of eighth-century prosthesis design and their comfort zones for rape and pillage, in irresistibly melodic Norwegian-accented English. It never gets old. Highly stylized, en el estilo de Quentin Tarantino — a bespectacled genius hires eight code-named thieves to rob the Spanish mint — this puzzle-box of a series employs time trickery, unreliable narration, flashy graphics and every other trick it can think of to keep you locked into its overheated plot.
This story of a fugitive crown prince battling his young stepmother and hordes of the undead to gain his rightful throne is a bubbling stew of genres: historical drama, comic zombie-plague horror, horse-opera adventure and sharp social satire. But its most radical departure from Korean-drama norms is its compact, six-episode first season. S treaming on Netflix. Cartoonlike in the best way, this rom-com mystery stars Park Bo-young as a video-game designer with an embarrassing secret: super strength, which is passed along through the women in her family.
Investigating a series of abductions, she strikes back at the Korean patriarchy while also romancing a standard pair of doe-eyed K-drama pretty boys. Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar play detectives whose particular attributes — modesty, compassion, extreme tenaciousness — make them both excellent cold-case investigators and perfect, if often testy, partners in this poignant and beautifully modulated crime drama.
But few shows could make you laugh quite as helplessly. A former cop goes undercover inside a Buenos Aires lockup that resembles a fortified, Felliniesque shantytown, in a show that makes most American prison dramas look like work release at Disneyland.
Mackenzie Crook who wrote and directed all three seasons and Toby Jones play a pair of friends who share featureless lives and a passion for metal detecting. Their long walks up and down the fields of Essex parallel their equally doubtful searches for love and fulfillment in a quiet comedy that could best be described as mournfully joyous. Streaming on AcornTV. A repressed intelligence analyst and a glamorous, childish killer have a mutually thrilling crush on each other, playing out their fascination, attraction and jealousy in life-changing and potentially lethal ways.
The stars, Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, and the principal writers, Phoebe Waller-Bridge Season 1 and Emerald Fennell Season 2 , have turned that premise into a riff on the romantic spy thriller that can be darkly funny one moment and devastating the next. An absorbing, straightforward thriller about an Israeli counterterrorism unit that shrewdly exploits the exigencies and emotions of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its dusty, mazelike locales.
Coel, Susan Wokoma as the alarmingly uptight sister and Shola Adewusi as the Pentecostal mom trade off dazzling comic performances. Developed by Roberto Saviano from his book of the same name also the source of the hit film , this saga of Neapolitan gangland politics is an exemplary mafia tale: brutal, brooding, utterly addictive. Only two of its four thus far seasons are available in America because of legal issues.
Sarah Lancashire gives a tour-de-force performance as a weary, tenacious patrol officer who continually finds herself butting up against the violence, physical and emotional, of men. Perhaps the smartest and most authentic-feeling procedural espionage series anywhere in the world, especially in its first two seasons.
Season 5 premieres in France in March. Mathieu Kassovitz stars as a foreign-intelligence agent who, after returning from a posting in Syria, makes a mistake whose increasingly grim ramifications have played out across the entire series.
Streaming on Sundance Now. No one has definitively said no to a fifth season, but no one has said yes, either. Streaming on Netflix and at pbs. Home Page World U.
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life
Shortly after the election, for no particular reason, I lifted a small set of arbitrary restrictions that I had previously imposed on my life. I started putting half-and-half in my coffee instead of drinking it black. I started using emoji instead of forcing myself to communicate in words.
So, when I was given this assignment to rank my Top 25 favorite series of the s, my immediate concern was how I could work with only 25 options. PBS was also an option, and the typical market also offered two to three independent stations. But network television was the center, and despite the limited options there was always something good to watch. As a benchmark, I include only regularly scheduled network series airing in primetime.
We treat Melbourne like the star she is, says Lucy Lawless
By Radio Times Staff. Spending more time indoors at the moment? Looking for your next TV obsession to help pass the time? How many can you tick off? The fifth season features some of its most ambitious and gripping tales to date, and of course Bandersnatch , the choose-your-own-adventure special, was a one-off mega-hit from the Black Mirror brand. Watch on Netflix. Set against a backdrop of a dusty Albuquerque universe of good, bad and ugly players whose stories twist, turn and evolve over five gripping series, this is a story that makes the viewer question everything until the very end. Ever since The Office exploded onto the scene at the turn of the millennium, completely changing the expectations of viewers in modern comedy, every project that Ricky Gervais has been involved with on the small screen whether with his Office writing partner Stephen Merchant, or alone has garnered a huge amount of excitement in the TV comedy world. Following the story of a man called Tony whose life is turned upside down after his wife dies of cancer, we see a man who, after contemplating suicide, decides instead to take his misery out on the rest of the world by saying and doing whatever he likes. The most obvious reason the comparison is made, however, is that like Breaking Bad, Ozark is a very, very good drama that will be talked about for many years to come.
Light of My Life
It looks just like a typical day on the west side of the city. In the urban canyon where Collins Street intersects with Bourke in Docklands, pedestrians, cyclists and a steady stream of trafficpass by, overlooked by the Melbourne Star. On the patch of parkland nearby, a small army spills out from underneath a marquee, dressed in black puffers and corralled by a few witches' hats. A convoy of trucks passes, taking the ambient street noise up several decibels, and a voice yells: "Cut!

All the good stuff. Based on the Archie comics, a group of high school students are faced with the news of the death of one of their classmates, and they are dedicated to trying to find out how he died. Teenage years are arguably the toughest times in life.

12 TV Series for Women That Can Inspire You to Completely Change Your Life
While has been a banner year for comically devastating TV heroines imported from Britain, Miri Matteson, the hero of the new Showtime series Back to Life , is so distinctive that to clump her in with the Fleabags and the Sharons , the Aines or even the Alices , feels like a disservice. Created and played by Daisy Haggard, Miri is impossibly kind and ineffably optimistic. The first few minutes of the call focused on the fact that, as teens, we went to the same all-girls school, a few years apart, where we were both earnest contributors to the annual poetry festival and where I once saw her play Miss Hannigan in the senior production of Annie. The show masterfully darts back and forth between modes. When Miri steps outside the prison walls for the first time since she was a teenager, she basks in the sunlight, absorbing the sensation of her new freedom. The punch lines are tinged with gloom: In the first episode, Miri returns to her bedroom, which is just as she left it, with posters of David Bowie, Prince, George Michael, and Michael Jackson on the walls. Only Jamie Oliver, peering out cheekily in a magazine spread from his Naked Chef days, has made it. As Miri contends with probation officers, whispers all around her from strangers, hateful graffiti, violent attacks, and a lurking Scandinavian man who seems to be tailing her as part of a true-crime investigation, she somehow keeps her chin up.
