So THAT’S Why We Look So Different In Selfies vs. The Mirror
Have you ever wondered why your face looks just a little different in photos than it does reflected in the mirror? The mystery hit me when I was at home one day overanalyzing my face in the mirror and deciding that I looked good enough for a selfie.
I probably took about 25 photos and I hated almost every single one. All of a sudden, my nose seemed to be 10 times more crooked than normal, and it was all I could focus on. One major factor is that photos generally show us the reverse of what we see in the mirror. When you take a photo of yourself using some but not all apps or the front-facing camera on an iPhone, the resulting image captures your face as others see it. The same is true for non-phone cameras. You have that familiarity.
Familiarity breeds liking. Different camera lenses can change the way people look in photos. At the end of the day, though, the way we appear in photos is the way we look to the rest of the world. In fact, studies have shown that other people generally like the version of you they see , as opposed to the image of yourself you see.

Here’s Why You Look Better in Mirrors Than You Do in Pictures
Welcome to the department of discarded selfies, a dark place deep inside my phone where dimly lit close-up shots of my face are left to fade away into the cloud. Are my eyelids that droopy? Is my chin that lop-sided? And how come nobody warned me? Taking purposefully ugly selfies encourages photographers to seize control of their self-image by rejecting beauty standards and embracing the imperfect humanity of our faces. But what about earnest selfies that are just accidentally ugly? Blame your brain instead. Selfies sometimes look strange to their subjects because of how we see ourselves in the mirror, how we perceive our own attractiveness, and the technical details of how we take them on camera phones. Whether or not a selfie is reversed after being shot is a major factor. Part of that is because our faces are asymmetrical.
Why do we look attractive in the mirror but ugly in the photos?
You could be a fitness model or look like the bottom of a garbage can. But most of us tend to fall somewhere near average. And, for us, the difference between a bad and good picture can be genuinely consequential to our professional and dating lives. I want to know this about me!
Looking in a mirror is often a transformative experience, but whether that transformation is positive or negative depends on so many factors, both external and internal. I can look in the mirror six times in a day and see something different each time. And while I have grown to embrace and even love my reflection, that took a lot of work and a lot of practice. I asked nine different people what it is they see when they look in the mirror; their answers may surprise you, as they surprised me, for focusing not just on the readily apparent, but also what is internal.

We have spent our lives seeing our faces in the mirror. We have spent our lives seeing our faces in the mirror, and we have become used to seeing our face that way round. Most people part their hair on one side rather than the other. Most people have one eye slightly larger than the other. Most people have one curvier eyebrow and one straighter or pointier. Most people smile slightly more out of one side of their mouth than the other.
